SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007
Grogans Take Top Honours ; Steve Smith the Clubman Champ
By Alan Lucas
We refined our race system this year, but again aimed at maximising interest by catering for "Clubman" racers in addition to the normal BSCRA 1/32 scale classes. This translated into four BSCRA classes: Production, Saloon, F1 and Sports, plus 2 Clubman sub-classes for people who don’t fancy the expense of strap-motor F1 and Sports racing. Clubman F1 is for restricted chassis and Falcon motors, based on rules published by
www.abslotsport.com. Clubman Sports is based on BSCRA Saloon rules, except Production and Super-Production motors are allowed as well as Group 12s.The overall Scottish Championship was based on results in Production and Saloon classes only. A separate Clubman Championship was based on results in Production, Saloon, Clubman F1 and Clubman Sports.
The Production class was dominated by Ross Grogan, winning all 4 rounds (2 at Barnton and 2 on Highland’s raceway track). Neil Grogan was next with three 2nd places, followed by Alan Lucas with one 2nd place. Steve Smith and Craig Towell took two wins each in Novice grade, but Steve took the Novice championship with two 2nd places to Craig’s one.
Ross also won the Saloon class, but Neil prevented a clean sweep by winning the first Highland round. The second places were shared around between Pat Skene, Craig, Neil and Alan. Neil took second in the Saloon championship. When the Production and Saloon scores were combined, Ross successfully defended his Scottish Champion title and Neil made it a perfect year for the Grogan household with second place. Alan, Pat and Richard Wallace took the minor places. Murray Wallace won the Junior Championship.
The Clubman championship proved to be much closer than the overall championship. Steve won Clubman F1 by 2 points from Andrew Hogg and also won Clubman Sports by 1 point from Craig, but Craig scored better in Production and Saloon. In the end a recount was needed to confirm that Steve was Scottish Clubman Champion by 1 point from Craig, with Andrew in 3rd place.
Formula 1 and Sports did not count towards the overall championships, but were still important for Nationals qualifying. Ross, Pat and Neil took the top 3 positions in both classes, in that order. The only person other than Ross to win a round was Richard, who won Sports at the first Highland round.
