RESPONGING HUBS

When your tyres are worn out, here's how to reuse your old hubs with replacement sponge "doughnuts".

Clean off all rubber and glue from the surface of the hub.

Remove any rubber from inside the grub screw head with a pin.

If the grub screw head is worn, replace the screw.

Note: If you are sending your hubs off for responging do the above, as a minimum, beforehand.

Put the cleaned hub on an "axle" and tighten the grub screw. I use 3/32" piano wire bent into an "L" shape app. 1.5" x 0.5" (as shown below) as this is easier to hold / grip.

Apply a thin coat of Evostik contact adhesive to the entire surface of the hub with your finger and leave for app. 10 minutes to dry. Make sure the adhesive does not get dirty.

Apply a thin coat of Evostik to the entire inside surface of the sponge with a small screwdriver and leave for app. 10 minutes to dry.

Pour a small amount of cellulose thinners into a shallow dish to a depth of app. 3mm (if you are using bossed hubs, the depth needs to be sufficient to reach the main hub surface).

Hold the sponge in one hand and the axle / piano wire in the other and dip one end of the sponge and the blank end of the hub into the thinners (as shown below) for a second or two. This softens the glue without dissolving it.

Push the wetted end of the hub into the wetted end of the sponge and don't stop pushing until the wetted end of the hub is a millimetre or two from the dry end of the sponge (as shown below).

Wipe off the excess thinners and remove the axle / piano wire.

Put the hub to one side and leave for app. 10 minutes for the thinners to evaporate off and the glue to bond.

The responged hub is now ready for trimming / grinding to size.
